Toyota’s modern RAV4 SUV boasts a selection of efficient powertrains, including a plug-in hybrid. In addition, this five-seater SUV, one of the best cars for sale in Kenya, promises decent performance from its powertrains and a long list of standard features on most trims.
The 2025 Toyota RAV4 is part of the fifth generation, introduced in 2018. Over the years, there have been slight improvements to the lineup, with Toyota introducing and removing some trims. Like most Toyota SUVs, the RAV4 is built on the TNGA-K platform which makes it strong and gives the plug-in hybrid models a lower centre of gravity thus improving ride quality.
Pros
- Impressive fuel economy across all trims
- A healthy list of safety features
- Large interior compared to rivals
Cons
- Lack of multiple standard features on base models
- Pricier top trims
What’s New?
The RAV4 doesn’t have any significant changes for the 2025 model year.

The 2025 Toyota RAV4 has four main trims: X, G, Adventure, and Z. However, these trims are available with a myriad of configurations, allowing buyers to find their desired RAV4. The base trim gets a decent selection of features, including 17-inch wheels, LED headlights with auto levelling, a 7-inch TFT colour driver’s display, and SRS airbags.
Upgrading to the hybrid models introduces the Bi-Beam LED headlights with not only autoleveling but also daytime running lights (DRLs). As for the interior, these base trims (petrol and hybrid) get black fabric upholstery.
Opting for the higher G trim introduces a few niceties, including larger 18-inch wheels, heated and ventilated seats, perforated synthetic leather seats, synthetic leather upholstery, and a larger 12.3-inch driver’s display.
Opting for the highest trims introduces additional features like 19-inch wheels, an 8-inch colour head-up display, and sportier synthetic leather perforated front seats with red stitching.
Fortunately, Toyota offers a myriad of optional features for the lower trims, including a panoramic moonroof, a premium JBL audio system, a smart key, etc.

Engine, Performance, and Transmission
The RAV4 has three powertrain options: a 2.0-litre inline-4 engine, a 2.5-litre inline-4 hybrid, and a 2.5-litre plug-in hybrid. The base engine, the 2.0 litre, produces 169 hp and 207 Nm of torque. This engine pairs with an electric continuously variable transmission, powering only the front wheels.
Fortunately, models with the base engine are also available with Toyota’s electric four-wheel drive system (E-Four), helping the RAV4 handle slippery surfaces and corners.
On the other hand, the hybrid powertrain produces 219 hp in its 4WD configuration and 215 hp in the 2WD configuration. The plug-in hybrid powertrain is the most powerful, boasting an impressive 302 hp. This helps it sprint from 0 to 100 kph in 6.0 seconds. These powertrains also pair with a CVT with a 10-speed sequential shiftmatic gear mechanism.
